Pain Management week

This week is pain management week for people, and the staff at The Animal Doctors @ Pakenham, thought that it would be nice to spread awareness for our pets this week as well.
Like humans, our pets can suffer from arthritis. This can make them sore and uncomfortable. Sometimes we are unaware that they are struggling, due to there natural instinct to show no weakness.

Does your dog struggle getting up, especially on cold mornings?
Does your cat have issues jumping on and off things?
Do your pets seem stiff or lame when walking?
Does your dog not want to go for walks anymore?

These could be signs that your pet is in pain and may be suffering from arthritis.

There are things you can do to help;

- Keep them warm and out of a draught. Give them warm, dry, soft bedding, away from cold winds and open doorways.

- Specific diet. Hills Prescription j/d diet is designed specifically for animals with poor joint health. It works to reduce the inflammation and is specifically formulated to help nourish cartilage.

- Anti inflammatory medication. Your veterinarian can organise a pain management regime for your pet, to make them as comfortable as possible.

- Gentle exercise. This keeps joints moving and muscles toned, while reducing the risk of weight increase.

- Keeping their weight down. Excess weight puts extra pressure on their joints.

If you think that your pet may be in pain, suffering from arthritis or you would like your pet checked, please call the clinic on 5941 3822 to chat with our friendly staff and to make an appointment.

This is Sparky.
Last week she was brought in by a member of the public as a stray. Luckily for her she was microchipped.

We were very happy to reunite this beautiful girl with her very grateful owners. πŸ’ž

Its that time of year again - EASTER TIME

The time of the year where we have chocolate and hot cross buns everywhere is going to be quickly upon us. Though these things usually go straight to our hips, they can be deadly to our four legged family members.

Grapes, currants and sultanas found in our favorite hot cross buns can cause kidney failure in cats and dogs. This is irreversible and can sometimes be fatal. Symptoms can show within a couple of hours and damage can occur within 72 hours of ingestion.
Symptoms that you may see include vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, abdominal pain and increased thirst with little to no urination.

Chocolate is just as irresistible to our furry companions as it is to us. And the darker the chocolate, the deadlier the consequences, with cooking chocolate being the most dangerous. Symptoms you may see with mild chocolate toxicity include vomiting, diarrhoea, and hyperactivity/restlessness. More severe symptoms include muscle twitching, increased urination, seizures, coma and even death.

If you know that your pet has eaten anything it shouldn’t have, the best thing you can do for him/her is to contact you veterinarian as soon as possible and they will advise you on what to do.

Prevention is the best treatment.
Make sure you lock up all chocolates and baked goods. Even if they are in a cupboard, make sure they are still up high and out of reach. If you are making special treats at home, try and keep your pets away. They will quite happily hunt out a bag of cooking chocolate or sultanas. And no where in the recipe is there an emergency visit to your vets.

We at the Animal Doctors @ Pakenham wish everyone a safe and happy Easter.

CHRISTMAS IS UPON US YET AGAIN!!!
BEWARE OF THE DANGERS!!!!!

A lot of the food that we have around the house this time of year is highly dangerous to our pets. Mince tarts, fruit cake, chocolate and some nuts are all poisonous, even in small doses. While cooked bones from out BBQ’s and turkeys can splinter and shatter causing injuries if eaten. Processed deli meats and sausages are to fatty for our pets to process and should not be feed to them at all.
But more so it is the little tidbits that they get given from every single person that walks through the door. These will add up to one sore belly and a very sick pet.

Let your visitors know not to feed your pet. For dogs, you could even make up a bandana for them to wear with β€œDO NOT FEED” written on it.

Keep all food covered up, away from bench edges or in the fridge, so your pets don’t decide to help themselves. Beware of boxes of chocolates and biscuits that you have wrapped under your tree. Animals have a keen sense of smell and will happily help themselves to those pressies.

Empty your inside rubbish bins on a regular basis, as the smells of scraps and leftovers are highly attractive to your pets.

This way we hope that everyone has a safe, happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.
